Associate Professor Jacqui Romero explores how the spatial structure of light can be used to encode and process quantum information in higher dimensions. Her work uses photonic systems with more than two quantum levels to increase information capacity, improve quantum measurements and develop new approaches to quantum communication and computing.

At the University of Queensland, Associate Professor Romero leads the Qudits@UQ research team. As QPI Synergy Lead for Research Pillars 1 and 3, she connects the Centre's work on high-performance qubits and encodings with its research on photonic links and integrated architectures. Her QPI research will investigate high-dimensional photonic qubits, or qudits, as a pathway to more efficient entangling operations, improved photonic fusion gates and reduced resource requirements in optical quantum computers.Associate Professor Romero is also an active leader, mentor and communicator within Australia's quantum community. Through QPI, she will help build collaborations across theory and experiment while supporting outreach, education and the development of emerging researchers in quantum science and technology.
