Associate Professor John Bartholomew develops interfaces that enable quantum information to be distributed over networks within, and ultimately between, quantum computers. His research focuses on integrated rare-earth ion technologies that transfer quantum information between optical photons, microwave photons and solid-state spins.
At the University of Sydney, Associate Professor Bartholomew the Quantum Integration Laboratory. For QPI, he will develop rare-earth-based quantum interfaces, microwave-to-optical transducers and sources of entanglement for modular quantum computers. His research will help integrate matter-based processors with optical networks, including through erbium-based devices and new methods for preserving quantum information as it moves between different operating frequencies.
Associate Professor Bartholomew is passionate about growing Australia’s quantum ecosystem in a way that embraces equity, diversity and inclusion to ensure that we are asking the best questions about this advanced technology, its applications, and fostering the next generation of experts. As chair of QPI’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee, he will help embed best practice throughout the Centre, including for recruitment, supervision and professional development.
