Dr Joshua CombesDr Joshua Combes

Joshua Combes works across fundamental and applied quantum theory, from quantum measurement and foundations to quantum sensing and computation. His current research focuses on new ways to encode and process quantum information while reducing the overhead of fault-tolerant quantum computing. This includes bosonic and higher-dimensional quantum codes, protected qubits, and fault-tolerant logical gates that exploit the structure of quantum hardware and physical noise.

At QPI, Combes leads Research Pillar 2 on encoded processors and coordinates the Centre’s work on resource-efficient quantum logic. The broad goal is to develop general methods for implementing encoded quantum logic efficiently across hardware platforms. His research focuses on low-overhead logical encodings and fault-tolerant gates for bosonic, qudit and protected-qubit architectures.

Dr Combes’ broad expertise allows him to connect foundational quantum theory with the practical requirements of experimental hardware. Through QPI, he will bring together researchers working on quantum codes, trapped ions, photons, superconducting circuits and integrated architectures to reduce the resources required for useful quantum computation.
