Dr Matthew Berrington is an experimental physicist who applies expertise in cryogenics, electronics and optics to the development of quantum technologies. His current research focuses on the control techniques and hardware needed to manipulate and read out the quantum spin states of atoms in solids, as well as scalable architectures for donor spin qubits. He is a Senior Research Associate in the Fundamental Quantum Technologies Lab at UNSW Sydney, led by Scientia Professor Andrea Morello.
Prior to joining UNSW, Matthew worked at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, United Kingdom, where he developed mid-infrared instrumentation for atmospheric remote sensing. His PhD research, completed at the Australian National University, studied magnetism and optical transitions in concentrated erbium crystals for use in microwave-to-optical conversion. This work, which could allow disparate quantum technologies to connect to a quantum internet, was awarded the 2024 Bragg Gold Medal for Excellence in Physics by the Australian Institute of Physics.
