Dr Timothy Newman is an experimental physicist who studies the physics of quantum systems and develops experiments to control them. At UNSW Sydney, Tim is a postdoctoral researcher in Scientia Professor Andrea Morello’s Fundamental Quantum Technologies Laboratory, where he studies single antimony (¹²³Sb) donors in silicon. He is developing devices that use dynamic strain in the silicon lattice to drive transitions between nuclear states. The team aims to couple a nuclear spin to a mechanical system in its ground state, creating a way to investigate how gravity interacts with quantum systems.
Tim completed his PhD in 2025 in the Quantum Integration Laboratory at the University of Sydney with A/Prof John Bartholomew. There, he designed and built a low-temperature, high-resolution optical spectroscopy setup to characterise erbium-doped solids. Building the magnets required for his experiments led him to co-found The Little Magnet Company, which makes compact superconducting magnets for spin-physics research.
Tim advocates for equity and public engagement in physics. He was a long-standing member of the EQUS EDI committee and took part in the Quantum and Dark Matter Road Trip. He also moonlights a sound artist, having composed composed lab material, a soundscape made from recordings in quantum laboratories for Todd Robinson’s exhibition Materialnonmaterial at Verge Gallery.
