A/Prof Ting Rei Tan develops new approaches to quantum computing by harnessing both the internal electronic states and the quantised mechanical motion of trapped ions. His research focuses on controlling these rich, many-level quantum systems to realise high-fidelity quantum operations, resource-efficient logical encodings, and quantum simulations of complex physical and chemical systems.

At the University of Sydney, A/Prof Tan is an ARC Future Fellow and Sydney Horizon Fellow in the Quantum Control Laboratory. As QPI Research Pillar 1 Lead, he coordinates the Centre's research on high-performance quantum systems. His QPI program will develop new trapped-ion quantum-computing architectures that exploit quantum many-level systems, including error-protected logical encodings, high-fidelity entangling operations, and advanced measurement protocols. A central goal is to substantially reduce the physical resources and operational overhead required for fault-tolerant quantum computation.

A/Prof Tan has made significant contributions to high-fidelity quantum gates, quantum gate teleportation, quantum simulation of chemical dynamics, hardware-efficient quantum error correction, and quantum sensing. Through QPI, he will bring together experimental trapped-ion capabilities with theoretical advances in hardware-efficient quantum computing and quantum error correction, helping establish new hardware-efficient pathways towards scalable fault-tolerant quantum computing.
