Professor Michelle Simmons has established atomic-scale fabrication as a powerful route to building precisely engineered quantum devices in silicon. Her research has established techniques for constructing electronic and quantum devices with near-atomic precision, enabling highly controlled silicon qubits and new approaches to manufacturing quantum processors.
At UNSW Sydney, Professor Simmons is Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology and founder and Chief Executive Officer of Silicon Quantum Computing. As part of QPI, she will contribute expertise in atomically engineered silicon devices, high-performance spin qubits, advanced qubit connectivity and efficient quantum error-correcting architectures. Her work will help connect fundamental discoveries in atomic-scale fabrication with the requirements of larger, integrated quantum systems.
Professor Simmons is one of Australia's most prominent scientific and technology leaders. A former Australian of the Year, she has been instrumental in building Australia's international reputation in quantum computing, translating university research into industry and inspiring broader public engagement with the opportunities created by quantum science.
