Professor Susan Coppersmith connects condensed-matter physics, quantum information and device modelling to understand how complex quantum systems can be controlled. Her work seeks to understand the behaviour of complex quantum systems and translate fundamental physical insights into practical approaches for controlling quantum hardware.
At UNSW Sydney, Professor Coppersmith contributes theoretical expertise across semiconductor qubits, quantum error correction and quantum algorithms. As QPI Synergy Lead for Research Pillars 1 and 2, she will connect the Centre's work on high-performance physical qubits with the development of resource-efficient quantum logic. Her research will include modelling noise and device behaviour, designing quantum-quantum machine-learning algorithms and investigating how silicon spin qubits can support efficient, scalable architectures.
Professor Coppersmith is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. In QPI, she will also provide senior scientific leadership and mentorship across the Centre's diverse experimental and theoretical research programs.
